2010 in review: Rise of iOS

Here, in no particular order, are some of the top stories we saw in 2010. The year was packed with Apple announcements, some planned and one unplanned. The real standout this year was iOS coming into its own. This year's WWDC was all about iOS, for example. The Apple TV now runs iOS. iOS 4.2 breathed new life into the already-new iPad, another major story of the year (a wildly successful one at that).

Even OS X 10.7 "Lion" has some iOS-inspired elements from what little we've seen. But it's looking like 2011 will be a return to the Mac side. In 2010 we saw the new MacBook Air, which Steve Jobs called the "future of notebooks." What surprises does Apple have for us on the Macintosh side of the house? 2011 will be an interesting year (again) to watch!

iPad

In 2010 the iPad was revealed and the netbook industry felt the impact. The tablet industry has awakened. We expect 2011's CES to have an enormous range of tablet computers. iOS 4.2 was released months later, giving the iPad features like multitasking which should have been there to begin with. Still, with paltry RAM, no front-facing camera and still not enough storage, the iPad has plenty of room to grow in 2011.

Apps on the iPad made news in themselves, with some apps being available for both iPads and iPhones, some costing more for "HD" versions (a term Apple doesn't endorse, by the way) and some only available for iPad. The new realm of a tablet format opened up possibilities for developers and we continue to see innovation from them on Apple's latest product.

Still, the publishing world was a little dismayed to see the iPad not take off as an e-reader on its own. Digital magazines are falling flat (in part due to Apple's lack of a proper subscription model) and the iBookstore has had its own problems.

iPhone 4

We all knew the iPhone 4 was coming thanks to a forgetful Apple employee and some poorly executed shenanigans from Gizmodo. If only they had tested the antenna!

The iPhone 4 introduced the high-resolution Retina Display, plus a sleek new form factor that brought about "antennagate" and a subsequent press conference to address the issue. iPhone 4 cases were given away and the problem was mitigated by a clever Apple marketing/communications team.

The iPhone 4 also heralded FaceTime as a video calling service (and potential open standard, although we hear inside Apple there is little impetus to release the open portions needed to bring the service to other platforms). The iPhone 4 introduced a front-facing camera to facilitate video calling.

The iPhone 4's addition of an LED flash introduced another wrinkle into the app approval process in that developers quickly started writing flashlight apps which took advantage of the powerful (but battery-killing) light source. Guess what? Apple finally woke up and wrote some clear but open-ended app approval guidelines that addressed many of the previously-unknown guidelines surrounding app approvals.
PSA: Alarm clock bug may cause iPhone alarms to fail on New Year’s Day 2011

As folks ring in the New Year across the globe, reports are surfacing of a troubling alarm clock bug affecting iPhones. According to a growing number of tweets, iPhone alarms that are set for New Year’s Day are failing to go off as scheduled. For the merry reveller with nothing to do on a Saturday, a late alarm may be a welcome relief, but for those who have to work bright and early, a delayed iPhone alarm may be the difference between getting to work late or getting there on time.
Different from the Daylight Savings alarm clock bug, this latest iPhone bug reportedly does not affect recurring alarms so a temporary solution is to create a new alarm and choose multiple days for it to go off. You can also use a Calendar event or a third-party iPhone app to trigger an alarm event on your handset. Apple has not responded to this reported issue so folks are on their own to apply this temporary fix. Thankfully, this bug may be short-lived as some testing performed by 9to5 Mac suggests the iPhone will auto-fix itself on the 3rd of January. Until that time, keep a close watch on your iPhone alarms, especially if you rely on those alarms as your only means for waking up.
Web 2.0 Hack Attacks Terrorize Social Media Platforms

Hacker attacks on Web 2.0 social media networking sites are likely to come more often and be more creative and complex. Hackers and cybercriminals' commando skills are increasingly leveraging the Web. Their aim is to maim Web 2.0 applications and social networking sites. Organizations waddling into the Web 2.0 stratosphere need to listen up and re-assess their defensive mechanisms to protect users from hidden threats lurking on legitimate sites.

Hackers are driving and distributing unrelenting malware perpetrating identity theft, financial fraud, and corporate espionage. As a growing number of Web 2.0 applications are routinely adopted into the business world they bring with them confronting security concerns.

Almost two-thirds of businesses use at least one Web 2.0 application while in constant dread that Web 2.0 could lead to data loss from hackers gaining access through the back door. Easy and inexpensive Web 2.0 applications implementation make it a natural shortcut to high consumer demand for more transparent and smoother on line experiences.

The tremendous popularity of Web 2.0 social media networking has virus writers and hackers crazed with hunting down and claiming popular and valuable Web 2.0 sites, targeting the greatest number of users as their own. With so much money at stake Web-based attacks are becoming more lethal, malicious, and crushing. The challenge to protect confidential information will become the greatest threat to enterprise security.

Hungry hackers and malware developers have 'drive them insane' tactics ready to compromise and devour popular Web 2.0 sites and install intimidating code to dupe personal and business confidential information out of users and systems alike.

Likewise spam, combining spyware, viruses, and other malware are on the rise. Web 2.0 social networks are further threatened with the chilling use of encryption to gain access through the back door without being detected. Seeds of doubt around security grow like weeds as spyware flourishes as constant security and management threats. Improvised and focused theft of private information, disarmed desktop, increased downtime, chewed up bandwidth and fanatic help desk calls are overwhelming call centers and IT departments.

On the other side, security companies are riding the wave of Web-based attacks into greater market share for their white knight services. Cynics are even citing that these attacks are originating from security companies themselves as a way of pocketing easy money. Don't laugh. Who's to say it's not true. After all, who would be more equipped to put out fires than those guarding the matches? Everyone has budgets.

Businesses eager to simplify security and all the associated costs of hardware, administration, management reporting and call center headaches may soon abandon 'old ways' and run to 'cloud' technology without fuss or fanfare if they can finally figure out issues around cost, security and delivery and before they're totally unhinged by hackers.

Christine McVeigh is author of 'Web 2.0 Traffic Demolisher - How to Dominate Your Niche Using Web 2.0'.
