Rumour: News Corp to layoff 550 MySpace employees

<div align="center"><img src="http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/686/myspacemusiclaunch20020.jpg" /></div>News Corporation is rumoured to be considering laying off half of MySpace's workforce, which currently totals 1,100 employees.
While there is no official word on any plans for restructuring, News Corp execs have made no secret of the fact that the company may consider selling its recently rebranded social network, should a suitable buyer make a satisfactory offer in the near future.
MySpace has been a problem
MySpace's COO Chase Carey said in no uncertain terms last month: "We've been clear that MySpace has been a problem.
"Current losses are not acceptable or sustainable. But we know that we have to work very hard in [the] coming months to get this thing sustainable," he said, adding, "We judge in quarters, not in years."
The reports of impending layoffs come from <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101231/myspace-mulls-significant-layoffs-with-potential-sale-looming/">All Things Digital</a>, which claims to have multiple sources familiar with the matter informing them that up to 50 per cent of MySpace's 1,100 workforce could be up for the chop in early 2011.
News Corp reportedly gave MySpace employees the last week of December off work to save cash. Not the nicest of Christmas bonuses!
MySpace recently rebranded itself as an entertainment portal that users can use in conjunction with (and easily connecting to) their Facebook accounts.

Wall Street Journal says apps may violate privacy, fingers MySpace and Pandora

<img alt="" src="/ip4main.jpg">You might have heard how careless some third-party apps can be with your personal data, but it may not yet have hit home -- offenders can include must-have programs like MySpace and Pandora, too. The Wall Street Journal tested 101 popular apps for iPhone and Android and discovered that over half transmitted unique device identifiers (UDID) to a flock of advertisers without so much as a prompt, and that some (including Pandora) even transmitted a user's age, gender and location to better target their marks. Now, before you boycott your favorite music apps, you might want to hear the other side of the story, which is that all this data is typically processed in batches and anonymized so that advertisers can't necessarily separate you from the crowd. However, the worry is that there may be little stopping nefarious individuals from creating a database that links your UDID to all this other data you send out. It's a juicy proposition for targeted advertising, sure, but also potentially real-world crime, so we doubt this will be the last we hear of UDID privacy scares.

How to Access Your Teenager's MySpace Account

News Corp considers MySpace sale

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/internet-and-broadband/images/MySpace_Tom%20Anderson-200-200.jpg"> News Corp is looking at its social media options, with reports that the company is open to offers for MySpace. The news comes directly from News Corp Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey, who told Reuters that he would be open to discussions about a sale or a possible partnership to take MySpace forward. Where now MySpace? MySpace was recently relaunched and rebranded as an entertainment site and, most interestingly, as a complementary social network to market leader Facebook. Around 60 million people visited MySpace in October according to the latest comScore figures. Around 151 million people are currently visiting Facebook each month. "There are opportunities here to do 20 things (with MySpace) but that doesn't mean you're going to do any of the 20," said the News Corp boss. "If there's something there that makes sense you ought to think about it," said Carey. News Corp is rumoured to be looking at potential MySpace partnership deals with net giants such as Yahoo and AOL. Carey now wants MySpace to turn a profit as soon as possible, hence the consideration of a sale or partnership deals. "I'm not going to break down (the number of) quarters [to profitability]," he said. "It's not years ... We need to deal with this with urgency. "We have really overhauled the product and made it a very different experience and I think they did a very good job," Carey said of the recent MySpace revamp and rebranding.

MySpace teams up with Facebook to take on Ping

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/classifications/computing/internet-and-broadband/images/MySpace-newlogo-200-200.jpg" />
MySpace has teamed up with Facebook in a ground-breaking move to gain and keep users, in addition to countering the threat from Apple's new 'Ping' social network.
News Corporation owned MySpace and Facebook have announced <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pressroom/2010/11/myspace-introduces-mashup-with-facebook/">'Mashup with Facebook'</a> this week to allow MySpace users to log into their Facebook accounts directly from their MySpace page.
This will allow users to port over their likes and interests from Facebook and then receive relevant streams of entertainment from MySpace dependent upon these likes and preferences.
The mashup is an updated version of <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/myspace-syncs-with-facebook-713180">MySpace Sync</a>, which was announced back in August, and confirms reports that MySpace was planning a <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/myspace-to-connect-with-facebook-909026">big link-up</a> with its rival Facebook.
Complimentary services
"We feel this is a complementary service to Facebook," said MySpace chief exec Mike Jones.
"This new feature is a great illustration of our strategy around social entertainment and enabling the real-time stream."
Facebook's VP of partnerships Dan Rose said the sharing of info with MySpace "makes a lot of sense."
Rose adds: "Sharing entertainment and music interests is part of many of our friendships, online and off.
"MySpace is giving people an easy way to bring their favourite bands, celebrities and movies from Facebook to create a personalised experience on MySpace from the start."
Forrester Research analyst Augie Ray opined: "People have come to think of MySpace in a certain way and while I don't think this deal will help them attract a lot of users it is necessary that those people on the site enjoy the MySpace experience and I think this helps.
"This is also a good opportunity for Facebook to demonstrate that the information you have about yourself and about your friends belongs to you. In many respects this is about Facebook changing attitudes over ownership of data than anything else."
Five years left for Facebook?
Speaking at an Australian web conference this week, Dr Jeffrey Cole – who five years ago predicted the demise of MySpace – said that Facebook has around five years left.
"The same thing will happen to Facebook but it's going to take a lot longer," said Dr Cole, a director of the World Internet project.
"And it's not going to be replaced by one big social networking community but it's going to fragment."
That said, Facebook has gained more than 50 million new users in the past year according to <a href="http://www.comscore.com/" title="">online metrics firm comScore</a>. Which means Facebook currently has 620 million users worldwide.
More than 33 million people in the UK use Facebook, according to the latest figures.
MySpace has just under 3 million UK users and 91 million users worldwide, making it the fourth biggest social network in the world right now.

Murdoch to pull the plug on MySpace?

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/classifications/computing/internet-and-broadband/images/MySpace-newlogo-200-200.jpg"> News Corporation's president has spoken out publicly against the financial state of social network MySpace, saying that the losses from the social network are 'neither acceptable or sustainable'. MySpace has been put on notice by parent company News Corp, with Chase Carey, News Corp's president, noting MySpace "is a problem" after quarterly losses in its News Corp's digital and other activities increased by $30m to $156m (£97m). MySpace relaunches <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/news-corporation-reboots-myspace-903655">MySpace relaunched recently</A> as a music and entertainment network and, interestingly, with concurrent marketing blurb claiming the site was now a 'complement' to Facebook, not a competitor. That didn't stop Chase Carey from noting this week that "traffic numbers are still not going in the right direction" and MySpace's performance is being judged "in quarters, not in years". News Corp originally bought MySpace back in 2005 for $580m (£360m) in 2005. Overall, News Corp's net income in the company's first quarter to 30 September 2010 increased by 36 per cent to $775m across all of its businesses, from 20th Century Fox film and Fox News through to Star TV in Asia.
