<P align=center><img src="http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/6135/mac228groupwinner200200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Despite the rise of Facebook, Twitter and other social media, email remains something that we all use every day. </P><br /><P><br /><P>And although over the past few years, more and more people have been using email via web-based clients such as Hotmail and Gmail, using a rich, desktop-based client still has some key advantages. </P><br /><P>Using a desktop client gives you a local copy of your emails, which enables you to view them even when you're offline – and although it might amaze some, there are still plenty of occasions when an internet connection simply refuses to connect. </P><br /><P>In this test, we've looked at six of the best desktop email clients on the Mac. </P><br /><P>Apple Mail comes with every copy of OS X, and has improved over the years from a bare-bones email client to a more powerful product. Outlook 2011 is the latest email client from Microsoft, replacing Entourage in the newest version of Office. Mozilla Thunderbird is an open source email client from the team responsible for Firefox, and includes plenty of powerful features. PowerMail, GyazMail and Mailsmith complete our line-up.</P><br /><P>All of the clients have strengths and weaknesses, but we've chosen to focus on ease of use, support for different email protocols, filtering and spam handling. Let's take a look… </P><br /><P><STRONG>Test One: Ease of use <BR></STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>Setting up an email client can go one of two ways… </STRONG></P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Test 1" src="http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/7647/mac228grouptest142090.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P>All of the products on test support the POP protocol, and all except Mailsmith support IMAP as well. Mail and Outlook also support Microsoft Exchange servers. Most will have a go at auto-configuring themselves to your account settings, although results can be variable depending on the type of account you use. </P><br /><P>As expected, Outlook performs well if you're using it with an Exchange account, but given a Gmail account it requires some tweaking. Likewise, GyazMail, PowerMail and Mailsmith require a little fiddling to work with Gmail properly. </P><br /><P>All of the products are easy to use when it comes to day-to-day tasks. Mail and Outlook integrate with calendar systems (built-in and iCal respectively) to create to-do items based on emails. </P><br /><P>Thunderbird, which in its previous incarnations was somewhat tricky to set up, has been much-improved. Now the overall interface has been brought up to the kind of standards set by Mail and Outlook. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Test Two: Multiple accounts <BR></STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>How well does the product handle multiple accounts?</STRONG></P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Test 2" src="http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/1383/mac228grouptest242090.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P>Many users now have multiple email accounts, which makes handling more than one email address important. All of the applications on test have the ability to handle multiple email accounts. </P><br /><P>There are two schools of thought about how email clients should handle multiple accounts. The first is that every inbox must be kept separate, so that you don't mix work mail with home mail, for example. The second says that everything should end up in the same inbox, so you can process all your email quickly and easily. </P><br /><P>Mail, Outlook and Thunderbird give you the option of both methods. With Mail or Outlook, you simply click on the Inbox icon at the top of the list and it places all your inboxes into a unified view. With Thunderbird, you need to click through to its special 'unified view' mode.</P><br /><P>The other packages keep inboxes separate, although in all cases you can create filters or special views that show you unread mail from all accounts. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Test Three: Filtering</STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>How well does each package filter incoming email? </STRONG></P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Test 3" src="http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/251/mac228grouptest342090.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P>All of the clients include the ability to filter messages as they arrive. Often, this will be used to file incoming mail from a mailing list into a folder, to avoid inbox clutter, but filters can do a lot more if given a chance. </P><br /><P>PowerMail includes some extra filtering options that will please power users, such as the ability to automatically save attachments to a specific folder – handy if you receive files from a client and want to ensure they are always saved in a particular place. </P><br /><P>Outlook enables you to set To Do actions using a filter. This means, for example, that you can add a rule which creates a To Do item for any email from your boss. </P><br /><P>Mail – the only other client with support for To Dos – doesn't have an equivalent feature. However, it does have 'smart mailboxes', which let you set up folders with a set of filtering criteria. Instead of moving mail into a folder, though, a smart mailbox just displays matching email, no matter where it's located, which is useful when searching. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Test Four: HTML handling <BR></STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>Email can come in HTML form, but do our clients like it?</STRONG></P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Test 4" src="http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/3336/mac228grouptest442090.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P>Despite the complaints of the purists who believe that all email should be standard text, HTML email is a fact of life. Not only do companies send out formatted newsletters using HTML, but some clients even enable users to create HTML emails to send to others. </P><br /><P>Mailsmith takes the purist's approach, and doesn't display HTML in-line at all. Instead, if you receive an HTML email, it converts it to text but gives you the option to send the HTML to a web browser for display. </P><br /><P>All of the other applications attempt to display the HTML, with varying degrees of success. PowerMail enables you to turn off HTML email by default, and – like Mail – also offers to automatically download images (although both applications note that this can be a security risk). </P><br /><P>PowerMail also includes a handy 'Quick Look' feature, so if an email has an attachment, you can see <STRONG>its contents without having to leave the application or open the file. </STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>The Winner: Apple Mail </STRONG></P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Apple mail" src="http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/4154/mac228groupwinner42090.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P>Of the six clients on test, three fell by the wayside fairly quickly. Mailsmith's lack of IMAP support outweighs its plus points. GyazMail, while having a simple interface, has little to recommend it, and PowerMail – despite its excellent filtering – feels like a product in need of a major upgrade. </P><br /><P>This leaves us with Mail, Outlook and Thunderbird. All three are easy to use and have powerful filtering and account support. However, Thunderbird lacks direct support for Exchange servers, while Outlook is the only one that costs money. </P><br /><P>That leaves us with one winner: Apple's Mail. It's free, works with virtually every kind of server going, is integrated well into OS X, and has plenty of options for handling accounts, spam, and filters.</P>

Spam isn't just a big waste of space in your email account. It is annoying to wade through all those emails. If you happen to work for someone who isn't technologically savvy, you could even get in trouble for getting spam mail. Your boss may be under the impression that you had to visit 50 porn sites and sign up for their email lists to get all of this junk mail in your inbox. Yes, every Facebook user can get an example@facebook.com email ID. It was a rather daring move for Facebook to release an e-mail feature, given the massive prominence of e-mail providers like Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo. But it could be a winning move too, given the oceanic 500 million subscribers that Facebook has. But would you really want to use Facebook for sending/receiving e-mails on a day-to-day basis? Would you shift your primary e-mail address to their service entirely? We asked this same question to our Techtree junta</EM> and this is what we've got till now.<BR><BR><BR><img align="baseline" border="0" hspace="0" src="http://technologyforum.x10.mx/image//113496opinionpollresult.jpg"></P><BR><BR><BR>At the time of writing this, a major 68 percent people expressed there negation towards moving to Facebook email. A small 18 percent Facebook loyalists said Yes, and another smaller 14 percent said they aren't entirely convinced and can't decide now (thus leaving the possibility for them to maybe make the shift in the future). We also asked people to state the reasons why they would or would not want to switch, and many had quite a firm opinion about their decision:<BR><BR>Marex from Vadodara said, "Currently I am happy with my mail service, so I have no intentions of switching to another mail service. I already have many accounts to manage, one more would be asking for too much to handle."  <BR><BR>Techtree reader Pradeep from Hyderabad is just one of many people who voiced his concern by saying, "Everyone knows about the security issues in facebook. Understanding, Translating, and Using Those E-mail Headers

<br /> <p>Technology has made it possible for families to stay in touch with the simple click of a button, for best friends to exchange pictures of the new baby, and for people to make new friends or loves without ever leaving the security and confines of their home. E-mail is often the mode of interaction and with the popularity of the internet at an all time high, e-mail has quickly become a popular new mode of communication between people.</p><p>Unfortunately, this means that not only the communication you want is going to be sent to your inbox. In fact, laws have been put into place to keep you from receiving and being bombarded by unwanted and/or unsolicited e-mails. This is popularly referred to as SPAM. While the majority of SPAM is simply unwanted advertisements, on occasion, SPAM can contain malicious and/or harmful pieces of coding that can literally shut your computer down permanently.</p><p>If you are the recipient of SPAM, or simply want to know who is sending you messages, knowing how to decipher e-mail headers can be beneficial information. Understanding the e-mail process is the first step to recognizing, understanding, and interpreting e-mail headers.</p><p>Let's consider this example using two fictitious characters, Ralph using the e-mail address ralph<strong>AT</strong>tugood.com (we've substituted the <strong>@</strong> symbol throughout this article with the word <strong>AT</strong> so as not to have live email links to these fictitious addresses) and Suzy using the e-mail address suzy<strong>AT</strong>goodvibe.com. Ralph is using dial-up offered by Tu Good, Inc. and Suzy is using DSL offered by Good Vibe, Corp. Additionally, Ralph is using his new e-mail client to compose, send, and receive e-mail called Tu Good Connection while Suzy is using GoodVibe Connection for her e-mail client.</p><p>When Ralph wants to send a message to Suzy, he creates and sends the message; the message is first passed from his computer to Tu Good, Inc.'s mail server, mail.tugood.com. Then mail.tugood.com contacts Suzy's e-mail server called mail.goodvibe.com. The message from Ralph is now stored at mail.goodvibe.com waiting for Suzy to check her e-mail. Suzy then downloads the message onto her computer to read and/or store the message.</p><p>There is a lot of information you can get from the headers. With an average e-mail having a minimum of four stops, each stop adds its own bit of information. These systems don't verify sender authenticity and anyone can send E-mail stating it has come from you.</p><p><b>Email through Encrypted Channels</b></p><p>There is no verification that it is sent by you only, as anyone can use  your  id. Your spoofed id mail can contain information that may be harmful to your organization. E-mail id spoofing is one of the most weakest component of corporate Communication systems. The mail you receive travels through various networks, Internet and servers before it reaches you mail box. There is no way it can be confirmed that it is intact and there is no modification of any kind to the content.</p><p>Most corporate communication solutions ensure security of your mail box and security of Internet link while you download emails from your mail box to your client like outlook express. This is good way to secure email channel between your client and server and provide very limited security.</p><p>To solve these issues of lack of verification, authentication and confirmation and hacking protecting there are many solutions available as discussed below. Each solution has its own advantages and limitations. In SPF the hosts and ips that will be sending mail from your domain are listed in Domain name system. Whenever a mail is delivered, spf records are verified and it is certified as SPF compliance. This certifies that email has come from senders mail server for sender domains. It doesn't provide any further protections. Many corporate server work with SPF support. This solution adds one step to security.</p><p><b>Sender Domain Keys</b></p><p>Addition to SPF another method that can be deployed are using Domain Keys technology. A pair of private/public key is generated for each server that your organization uses and public key is published using your Domain Name System, i.e. Public key is added to DNS records as text filed. All mails passing through these servers are checked for Domain Keys. If it is sent by local users a header is added for domain keys to the mail and it is delivered. If email is coming from outside users, Its verified using Domain Keys information in email header and certified OK using public key of sender domain using sender domain DNS records.</p><p><b>E-mail Certification</b></p><p>The content of mail sent by local users are certified by adding check-sum information using domain keys to the headers of the mail. If it has come from outside check-sum is compared using Domain keys of sender domain and it is certified as OK if check-sum verification passes. This method provides double security of sender id verification as well as mail content verification. This system is much more secured and authenticated compared to SPF and can provide very high level of security when used jointly with SPF.</p><p><b>Simple Secured System</b></p><p>It is very important that the sender servers are very secured. i.e. All mails sent by them are authenticated, verified and certified. Most of corporate servers don't have this system in place. Most of cases there is no authentication for local users sending mails. Many cases any user can send email pretending any other users. Even with authenticated system any user can log-in with one id and can send mail pretending any other user in organization. All these security issues to be addressed while deploying corporate secured communication system. <P>Download a PGP authentication program. This can take the form of a plugin for your e-mail client that can process signatures or downloading a command-line-based tool, such as PGP or GPG. All these can be found by doing a Web search.</P><P>Obtain the public key for the individual who sent you the secure e-mail. PGP's protection is based on each user creating a unique cypher for encrypting documents. In the process, two keys are created: a private key, then a public key. The public key is distributed to the world. The private key must be closely guarded by its owner. If you have downloaded a user's public key, it means you will be able to encrypt files that can only be opened by the private key's owner, and lets you verify that a signature does indeed come from that user.</P><P>Load the public key into your chosen authentication method: be it the command line or a Web browser plugin. Instructions for how exactly to do this vary from program to program, but the process for doing so can be found in your program's documentation.</P><P>Download the signature from the e-mail. If you have a plugin for your e-mail client this step is unnecessary, as the plugin will automatically verify a signature against the user's public key and display a message telling you whether it's valid. If not, take note of the directory to which you downloaded the signature, then open your command-line tool. Type in the appropriate command to verify a signature (again, it depends on your tool, but they can be found in your documentation), and the directory in which the signature is sitting. The program will then display to you whether the signature is valid or not.</P>
