It’s been reported that there has been an increase in the number of air conditioner thefts this summer, and while it may sound like nothing more than a terrible prank, it’s more serious than it seems. While it probably wasn’t the intention of the thieves to cause anybody harm, their actions might have even contributed to the death of an elderly Dallas woman last month.</div>

Computer Hackers Wanted For Organized Cyber Crime

Low Risk - High Return - Work Your Own Hours The Ultimate Get Rich Quick SchemeWow! Can you imagine a help wanted ad like that in your local newspaper or pay-per-click ad in your favorite search engine?Yet, organized cyber crime has become the most profitable - low risk - high return crime of our age. Hundreds of thousands of hackers are quietly using the Internet, hiding behind thousands of captured computers, stealing identities and money from innocent people like you and me. Sadly, there is little chance the hacker will ever get caught.Organized cyber crime has become a big-time profession. Professional hackers make it their daily job to take advantage of current computer security trends and send out threats like Spam, phishing e-mails, Trojan horses containing key loggers, hijackers and more, all targeted to steal your identity and ultimately your money. These cyber criminals can work alone or in groups. Either way, their first goal is to capture computers and turn them into zombies or bots. These are computers that the hacker controls without the owners knowledge. As more and more computers are captured, the hacker develops an Army of computers or botnet that can be used for any number of criminal activities. The botnet may send out Spam e-mails, and Trojan horses. A botnet can cause denial-of-service attacks on web sites extorting money from the web site owners. This whole time the hacker is hiding behind a string of computers under his control. Tracing back to the hacker is nearly impossible.Hacker Tools For SaleAnyone can take advantage of the computer security trends and become a part of the organized cyber crime world. The tools of the trade are everywhere. You can find web sites that promote the use of these tools. What do you want? Here's a partial list of items you can find on the Internet:·	Remote Access Tools - known as RATs. These tools allow remote access to a computer. They were originally developed for white hat hackers to remotely repair computers. Now, this is a major tool in a cyber criminal's toolbox.·	Key logger Tools - Corporations and even parents find these tools necessary to keep everyone in line on the Internet. Unfortunately, hackers have learned how to use these tools to steal your private information.·	Video And Audio Systems - Hackers have tools that will penetrate your computer systems and watch your every move through the camera mounted on your computer or microphone that came with your computer.·	Voip And Broadband Phone Services - you can easily find tools such as web dialer worms to break into computers and listen to conversations or even dial and use the phone service. How hard is it for a criminal to place drug purchases or conduct terrorist activities with your computer?·	Computer Memory Storage - hackers can acquire tools to section off your computer and store anything they want like child pornography, criminal records and more.·	Spamming Tools - want to send e-mail out of someone else's computer? Just purchase this easy to use software and you can make that happen. Hackers send millions of Spam e-mails every day making up over 90 percent of all e-mail sent out worldwide.·	Create Your Own Virus - Yes, it's true. There are many web sites offering to mutate a current virus to your needs. Lately, virus attacks have been more targeted. That's why you haven't heard about massive virus attacks lately.·	Drive By Spyware - There are some web sites that promote that they will pay you to allow them to place a tool on your web site that puts spyware on every computer that visits the site. The more computers infected the more money you make.·	Computer Scrambling Devices - you can purchase tools that will scramble all or some of the information on a computer. Simply invade a computer, scramble important information, leave a message telling the victim to pay a few hundred dollars ransom to an overseas account and they will send the code to unscramble the information. This list could go on and on. Organized cyber crime uses every tool they can find or devise to take advantage of the current computer trends and enhance their threats. The headline reads: Computer Hackers Wanted For Organized Cyber Crime! The sub headline should say, "The general public is indifferent and isn't doing much to protect themselves. The Timing couldn't be better."Organized cyber crime has moved, for the most part, from targeting large businesses to individuals and small business. Criminals know that this targeted group has little knowledge of computer security and a small amount of money to invest in their protection. They view this group as easy prey. So far, they are right on target. The sad truth is that most people either don't seem to care or don't know what to do. Most of those that don't know what to do don't do anything about it, either. That's the current computer security trend. As a result, organized cyber crime and computer security threats continue to grow at an accelerating pace. Over $67 billion was stolen last year. Over eight million identities have been stolen every year for years and years back. What Can We Do To Fight Organized Cyber Crime And Turn These Computer Security Trends Around? For the most part, criminals are lazy. They are looking for the low road - not the high road. Making yourself a hard target to attack is your first defense against organized cyber crime and computer security threats. The old saying, "knowledge is power," is most important. Make sure everyone in your home or business understands the threats and is careful not to allow these on a computer. However, even with the best knowledge there can be accidental leaks from opening Spam e-mail, drive-by-hacking from a web site, downloading infected cds and more. Here are some tips to protect your home and business:·	Make sure you keep up with the latest most up-to-date Microsoft Windows patches ·	Use an industrial grade bi-directional firewall. Most over-the-counter and products offered by Internet services don't offer this quality technology ·	Make sure you have up-to-date antivirus protection ·	Make sure you have best-of-breed anitspyware protection. Antispyware and antiviruses are different computer security threats and require different protection technologies. ·	Avoid web sites that may have spyware including gambling and pornography. The best protection is using the same computer security solutions used by major corporations around the world. A solution that uses overlapping technologies to prevent antiviruses, spyware and other computer security threats.

Fighting Cyber Crime With Cyber Technology

As it has become apparent in today's technology age, spyware, malware, and internet privacy are becoming more and more prevalent. Individuals and groups of individuals thrive on stealing information about a person, for their own financial gain.  According to IC3 (The Internet Crime Complaint Center) and the FBI, monetary losses in excess of $239 million dollars have been accumulated by 72,226 victims in 2007. This does not take into account how many people suffered monetary losses but didn't report them to the IC3 website or the FBI. Contact with complainants predominantly stemmed from e-mail (73.6%) or a webpage (32.7%) communication. Knowing that so much information can be obtained about a person, across the internet, people still browse the internet, use online instant messaging, download music, even engage in online multiplayer games without relying on any additional security then what is built into their operating system. With this being the case, it's surprising that people are afraid of <a href="" rel="nofollow">identity theft</A>, yet they choose to surf naked. Browsing the internet (or Web Surfing) and is a dangerous thing, because from the minute you connect, you are leaving a foot print of who you are, where you are, and what you are doing. If a person is surfing the internet anonymously using Covert Surfer, then their personal information would be harder to retrieve, because hacking the victim's computer becomes more difficult since the perpetrator cannot find the true location or their real IP address. Cover Surfer allows you to surf the internet anonymously and securely by encrypting the data that leaves your computer through the program, and decrypting it when data is received. It is truly the Global Internet Security Tool which keeps your data safe and cyber spies away from your personal information. Simply Put - Surf Naked and become a statistic, or use Covert Surfer and limit your chances.

Cyber Crime

Everyone who works on a computer must be familiar with the term "Cyber Crime". Initially, when man invented computer and then the technology for communicating between computers was evolved, he would have never thought that the cyber space he is creating could be flooded with any crime i.e. cyber crime. But now almost all of us might have heard the term computer crime, cyber crime, e-crime, hi-tech crime or electronic crime which is nothing but an activity done with a criminal intent in cyber space. Simply put, it is an activity which is generally criminal in nature, where a computer or network is the source, tool, target, or place of a crime. To say in one line, "Cyber crime refers to all the activities done with criminal intent in cyberspace."Such crime involves an information technology infrastructure, including illegal access (unauthorized access), illegal interception (by technical means of non-public transmissions of computer data to, from or within a computer system), data interference (unauthorized damaging, deletion, deterioration, alteration or suppression of computer data), systems interference (interfering with the functioning of a computer system by inputting, transmitting, damaging, deleting, deteriorating, altering or suppressing computer data), misuse of devices, forgery (ID theft), and electronic fraud. This article intends to give an overview of Cyber Crimes since in e-life (of which we all are a part of) conventional crimes like extortion, forgery etc. are being done with the help of computers; which most of us are using for online monetary transactions. In today's e-Age, 'Crime' has extended itself beyond physical assault or mental torture; now it also affects our e-life. E-Life means our existence & living in the cyber world. Every one of us is a part of this cyber world, directly or indirectly, since computers & internet are now an integral part of our personal & professional life. Just like any other invention, Computers & Internet are a boon to human kind if used in a right way and to the advantage of the society. However, as we all know, everything has its pros and cons and so computers & internet are not an exception. If we consider 'Cyber Crime' as virus then it won't be untrue to say this virus is corrupting man's significant development (computers and internet) which is responsible for developing civilized society for men. Cyber Crime is a menace all over the world and is the one of the most difficult & challenging to detect & investigate. You will find it interesting to note that even the official website of the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of Crime Branch Mumbai quotes "The invisible criminal is dangerous than the visible one".You may be wondering why one should know about Cyber Crime? Most of us are using internet and computers for online transactions where we transmit personal information and possibly do monetary transactions. If your personal information goes in wrong hands and you become bankrupt or you start receiving absurd mails or your e-mail account gets flooded with unwanted mails; means you have become a victim of Cyber Crime.Cyber Crime has various forms which may include hacking (illegal intrusion into a computer system without the permission of owner), phishing (pulling out the confidential information from the bank / financial institutional account holders by deceptive means), spoofing (getting one computer on a network to pretend to have the identity of another computer in order to gain access to the network), cyber stalking (following the victim by sending e-mails or entering the chat rooms frequently), cyber defamation (sending e-mails to all concerned / posting on website the text containing defamatory matters about the victim), threatening (sending threatening e-mails to victim), salami attacks (making insignificant changes which go unnoticed by the victim), net extortion, pornography (transmitting lascivious material), software piracy (illegal copying of the genuine software / programs), email bombing, virus dissemination (sending malicious software which attaches itself to other software), IPR theft, identity theft, data theft, etc.Hacking, destroying files and data through spreading virus are the largest number of offences in the cyber world."Russia, China and Brazil are world leaders in cyber crime. India is fast emerging as a major hub of cyber crime, however our legal system is already in place to tackle this menace of cyber crime and to control it and punish the guilty. Cyber Crime, which we may define as "an unlawful act wherein the computer is either a tool or a target or incidental to the crime", has both civil as well as criminal remedies. So let's talk about the remedies available against such crimes. In India, the offence of Cyber Crime is covered under Information Technology Act 2000 and under the Indian Penal Code.Cyber Crime Cells have been established by law in major cities. These Cells function directly under the Commissioner of Police of respective cities. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) already has a cyber crime wing operational since 1999.The Government has established "The Cyber Regulations Appellate Tribunal" under the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Tribunal has the same powers as are vested in a Civil Court for requiring the discovery and production of documents, receiving evidence on affidavits. But the decisions of the Tribunal can be contested by the High Court. The Information Technology Act not only applies to the offence committed in India, but it can also be used to bring offenders from foreign countries to India for trial.Powers of Cyber Crime Cells:Any police officer, not below the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, or any other officer of the Central Government or a State Government authorised by the Central Government in this behalf may enter any public place and search and arrest without warrant any person found therein who is reasonably suspected or having committed or of committing or of being about to commit any offence under this Act.Punishment for Cyber Crime:A person found guilty of cyber crime shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine or with both.Salient features of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008:The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 was enacted in October 2009.The term "digital signature" has been replaced with "electronic signature" to make the Act more technology neutral. A new section has been inserted to define "communication device" to mean cell phones, personal digital assistance or combination of both or any other device used to communicate, send or transmit any text video, audio or image. A new section has been added to define "cyber café" as any facility from where the access to the internet is offered by any person in the ordinary course of business to the members of the public. There is an addition of several new offences into the Act. Section 66 has now been expanded to include sections 66A, (offensive messages) 66B, (Receiving stolen computer) 66C, (Identity theft), 66D (Impersonation), 66E (Voyeurism) and 66 F (Cyber Terrorism). Section 67 has been expanded to include Sections 67A (Sexually explicit content), 67 B (Child Pornography),In short about Cyber Terrorism:Cyber terrorism is the premeditated use of disruptive activities, or the threat thereof, against computers and/or networks, with the intention to cause harm or further social, ideological, religious, political or similar objectives, or to intimidate any person in furtherance of such objectives.Cyber terrorism can have a serious large-scale influence on significant numbers of people. It can weaken countries' economy greatly, thereby stripping it of its resources and making it more vulnerable to military attack. CS. A Door Way to a New Crime Wave

The Internet in and of itself can be an intimidating network filled with hoaxes and criminals that are out to make what was intended to be an new source of communication freedom, seem like a trap in which any one of us in this world can become an unsuspecting victim to a number of cyber crimes. As these crimes increase, so to does the terminology and definitions that describe them. Viruses are no longer the sole worry of those who look to defend themselves from a computer or information systems attack. There is a laundry list of definitions that the common user needs to be aware of to avoid making themselves and their private computer and information systems vulnerable, which would allow the cyber criminals of today to exploit the many door ways to their Identity Theft crime waves.Malicious Software CodesHave you noticed that your computer system is running unreasonably slow? Does it stall when shutting down, or refuse to turn off. Do some of your applications freeze on startup? Are you often prompted to download a Malware removal tool from a websites that had conducted a “Free Courtesy Virus Scan?” If you experience any of these frustrating and sickly computer symptoms, then your workstation is probably the victim of some form of malicious code. Malicious code is the first avenue that an attacker can take on a vulnerable information system. When the common computer user thinks of the Malware, the majority would probably think the words viruses, or spy-ware. Very view would be aware of the other malicious codes that exist, codes such as worms, zombies, logic bombs, software key-loggers, backdoors, or root kits. The US Department of Homeland Security has termed all of these codes as Crimeware, as they are typically used to breech the security of an information technology system, and perform criminal activities such as data compromise or theft. The old trend of attack was to knock down or disable the workstation, which probably forced the user to reinstall the operating system. But with the advent of e-commerce, a new trend of intrusion is emerging.Cyber criminals now wish to gain as much access to a user’s data as possible and a clean install probably destroys the target. The trend now is to attack with out being detected, which would slow the system down to some degree, but would allow the attack to probe the user’s data, and possibly reveal credit card numbers, account information, and other data which could in turn be used to steal ones digital self. Though the home user is more vulnerable to attack, due to the lack of major corporate funding to implement the advanced intrusion detection/prevention tools of today, the target is shifting to corporate America. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, and the Science and Technology Directorate, cyber criminals with the use of Malware or Crimeware, are targeting more and more corporations to gain access to intellectual property and general business data. Malicious code being Malware or Crimeware is dangerous enough when it is deployed on its own, but when coupled with social engineering, it becomes a dangerous avenue of attack for any unsuspecting user.Denial of ServicesAccording to Cisco Press Denial of Services is a type of network attack design to bring the victimized network to it knees by flooding the network with useless traffic. This attack is by far the most commonly feared among major corporations in that an attack on its services is an attack on the business model of the company itself. In other words, denying the web service of an online search engine, or the FTP service of online FTP site, causes down time, this in turn translates in to the loss of corporate income. Denial of Service attacks can be deployed using a number of venues. According to Michael T Simpson, the Ping of Death is a modified ICMP packet that is redesigned to violate the maximum ICMP packet size of 65,535 bytes, which is then used to crash or freeze systems as they attempt to respond to the oversize packet. This simple but effective packet can completely deny a Network Interface Card access to the Internet just by the overflow of pings that the host under attack is attempting to respond to.The Distributed Denial of Services attack can use the malware code known as zombies which have been installed on a multiple home user’s computers, to then attack a single corporate information system. This type of attack is used to fool the Intrusion Detection Systems of the corporate office into logging the IP addresses of the zombie infected host, and hides the true origin of the attack. This has the added tactical effect of the attacked host being digitally surrounded by the attacker’s probes and spoofs, and an attack that can exist for extended periods of time due to the fact that the originator of the attack can reproduce the attack at will from a number of unsuspecting hosts. Zombies can be coded as viruses, worms, or logic bombs. The virus is downloaded when the user opens a non-suspicious looking email, probably a hoax, and would unsuspectingly download the virus onto the workstation. As a result the virus would then use services running in the background of its host machine to then carry out an attack on the destination server or workstation. Worms would act in the same manner, but do not have to be attached to a message to spread to and from the host. The logic bomb could exist as either a virus or a worm but would begin the Denial of Service attack at a predetermined date or the start of an event, rather than relying on the user to execute the malicious program.Social Engineering and Identity TheftAccording to Michael T Simpson, Social Engineering is using an understanding of human nature to obtain information from people, and is the most common form of information security breech. Human nature in the case of social engineering is people’s natural instinct to trust one another. Social engineering can take the form of the “chain letter email” where the attacker states that bad luck or other miss fortunes will strike the user who doesn’t pass the message on, and good fortunes await the user who passes the message on to a pre-determined amount of “friends.” Social engineering can also be exploited through a simple telephone call asking for an email address of a fellow employee. A social engineering attack is often just a precursor to more devastating attack. Though the leaking of an email address may not seem important, it may give the attacker a means to introduce countless forms of malicious code into the company’s internal information systems infrastructure. As a result of these various forms of cyber attacks, a new and terrifying form of cyber attack that has emerged within the last decade. Identity Theft has evolved out of social engineering and malware attacks and now encompasses almost every aspect of information system security exploits. According to the Federal Trade Commission, this form of attack uses information technology to gain access to an individuals data to then reproduce a digital copy of that individual that can then be used to make false purchases with credit cards, pose a an citizen of a nation to which the attacker does not belong, or falsely accuse the Identity victim of a crime that that individual did not commit. The Federal Trade Commission also notes that nearly 8.5 million Americans were the victims of Identity Theft crimes in the year 2006. This form of attack is becoming more frequent and more destructive. According to reports Identity Theft 911 Inc., TJ Max and its subsidiary stores were victims to an Identity theft attack where more than 60 worldwide banks reported fraudulent charges that used the information obtained from this attack. A more dramatic and compelling article from Identity Theft 911 Inc. notes that the biggest banking security breech in American history was used to access 676,000 accounts during and inside attack from employees of Bank of America, Wachovia Bank, Commerce Bank, PNC Bank and the former manager of the New Jersey Department of Labor. This attack also gives rise to the firm believe that employees, and not the advance cyber terrorist and hackers of today are truly the most dangerous attack in a corporation. A cyber-terrorist who wishes to attack and compromise data must first break in to the corporate network, by pass the Intrusion Detection Systems, avoid honey pots which are designed to fool and entrap attackers, and then locate the most useful and profitable information to make the attack worthy. An employee on the other hand could easily dumpster dive by not shredding documents as ordered, piggy back into a more highly secured area of the office due to their relationships with fellow employees, or shoulder surf passwords or other data by looking over a fellow employee, or a customers shoulder All of these internal attacks are another form of social engineering, which in the banking identity theft case, was used with disastrous consequences. The premise of this attack used a false collections agency under the scam name of DRL which sold its information to 40 law firms to conduct collections on behalf of the shell company using the Social Security numbers, account numbers, and account balances of the stolen data. Many of the targeted New Jersey customers had to close old accounts and open new accounts ranging from the normal checking accounts to some brokerage accounts.Proper DefensesWhat can be done to defend ones self from these advanced digital attacks. Well the most low cost form of defense comes from awareness and a little common sense. Leaving the workstation on even thought it is not in use is almost a sure fired way of being attacked with out the user’s knowledge. If the workstation is not password protected, an attacker can simply sit down and start obtaining data with little or no effort. Preventing a remote password guessing or brute force attack is as simple as shutting down the workstation during non-business or off hours. This will limit the attacker’s time frame in which the actual brute-force attack can be implemented. The easiest manner in which a user can prevent data theft or corruption is powering off the device which stores the data. However, turning of workstations or servers is simply not an option for some corporations. Advanced firewalls and Intrusion Detections Systems are often used as combined forces to deter or prevent attackers.Firewalls are hardware of software systems that are designed to block specified TCP/IP ports that are used to access services both in and out bound on a network interface. Intrusion Detection Systems are most commonly used to track or log these port attacks base on administrative rules defined by a systems administrator or Chief Information Security Officer. Honey pots, which are information security traps that are designed to be vulnerable to attack to lure the criminal in to an unsuspecting trap can also be used in combination with an Intrusion Detection System to increase the corporations IT security. Still, these systems are not enough to protect corporations from attack. As seen in the Bank Identity Theft Case, no firewall could have blocked the intrusion into the private lives of the holders of the 676,000 bank accounts of the Wachovia, Bank of America, Commerce Bank, and PNC Bank Identity theft crime. This crime was committed from inside these security barriers, which exploited another gapping and often overlooked hole of information security. Social engineering exploits peoples natural instinct to trust others, but more so, it exploits the lack of corporate training of recognizing this and other forms of attack. As a home or corporate user, self awareness above all is your best defense amongst this digital crime wave. There are a number of websites and journals that provide the most recent news and information concerning the types of potential attacks that a computer operating system, network operating system, or corporate information systems infrastructure may be vulnerable to. Symantec, the corporation that has one of the most deployed Small Office Home Office security systems in Norton Internet Security, also lists the latest common Malware threats to computer operating systems on their Threat Awareness Website. IT professionals may also find the latest corporate level security exploits at <a href="http://cve.mitre.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_new">http://cve.mitre.org/</a> which is a list the standardized names of the security vulnerabilities and exposures that has been submitted by various vendors and agencies associated with the information technology industry. Corporations should conduct quarterly and annual preventative training, with special focuses on social engineering.SummaryThe Internet, and networking in general has, become an intricate part of our everyday lives. As the businesses and countries of this world continue to link and communicate between one another, we must all keep a watchful and ever aware eye on the barrage of attacks used by the same technology that was meant to increase the standard of living and commerce. No Information System will ever be 100% secure from the attacks that are possible, but training and preventative maintenance can make the attacks more detectable, and reduce the downtime of a service if an exploit is breeched. We should all continue to be mindful that no matter what advances we experience in information technology, more and more the target in the end, is becoming the human individual themselves. Corporations and individual home users must learn from past mistakes, incorporate those mistakes and the lessons learned into training, so that the door way to these cyber crimes will ultimately begin to close.BibliographyUS Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate (2006) “The Crimeware Landscape” 3-5, 9-18This is a joint report that defines and describes the affects of various Malicious Software Codes, termed Crimeware in the report, and how these codes are coupled with other forms of attacks such as hacking and social engineering.Michael T Simpson (2006) “Hands on Guide to Ethical Hacking and Network Defense” 3, 50-57, 4, 76-83This book covers in preventative measures, and tools used in the avoidance of information systems attacks. Cyber Crime

There is a very old and correct saying that goes on to say that a coin has two sides. Like a coin, almost every aspect of life has two sides. For example, take the advancement of technology and the crime associated with it. With the improvements in technology, computers have formed an integral part of the working world. Computers along with them have brought greater work and time efficiency in the working circle of the world as a whole. However, there is a dark side to this as well. Along with all the benefits that computers and technology comes the rising and alarming threat of cyber crime. Thanks to the crimes committed by the hackers and predators, the good bring the evil. The dangers that cyber crime is posing to computers and information stored in the computers is real. The affects have been felt by almost all the countries. Serious concerns are rising against the growing threat of cyber crime. This potential threat to the information possessed in the computers is alarming. The reason that cyber crime is posing a serious threat is because most countries around the world have no existing laws against it. This leaves us all at the mere mercy of the same technology that we use for good and they use for destruction. One resort that you can take against cyber crime is installing ant-virus, spyware, and security programs. This is still unfortunately; it is not a full proof step. Hackers can easily hack through the computers of others you know and work with. This makes the data stored in the computer more open to these attacks. One reason why cyber crime has been gathering so much of attention, is the fact that cyber crime has no boundaries. Cyber crime is breaching national barriers with ease. This is jeopardizing the political and the defense strategies of the country. It is reported that after committing the crimes the hackers reap rewards. They sell the information they stole to other countries and businesses for large sums of money. There is another reason why cyber crime is becoming so common. Hackers operate together from different places. This makes it harder for law enforcement to track and find them. Hackers usually operate from different countries and through multiple networks making tracking them almost impossible. It is time for national bodies and governments too operate together. Making a legal framework and structure through which no hackers can slip through before committing these cyber crimes.
