Acer Aspire ICONIA TAB A100 available for pre-order on Amazon UK for 299.99 GBP

The Acer Aspire ICONIA TAB A100 is now available for pre-order on Amazon UK for 299.99 GBP, which is about $487. That money buys you a WiFi-only version of the 7-inch Android tablet, which as far as I’m concerned is good enough. Rest of the specs include NVidia’s Tegra2 dual-core processor, two cameras (the main one counts 5 megapixels), HDMI port, Bluetooth 3.0, 8GB of built-in storage and a microSD memory card slot. Interestingly enough, Amazon.uk also offers the WiFi-only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab for the same price — and as you may know, Sammy’s tablet lacks dual-core processor. Now the best part. You may be aware that British always (and I mean always) pay more for their gadgets. I’m not sure why that’s the case — and VAT can’t be the only one to blame — but there is hope the Aspire ICONIA TAB A100 will be offered for less once it hits the U.S. In other words, I wouldn’t be surprised Acer’s tablet gets a below-$400 price tag once it goes on sale in the States.

Vision3's Matt Smith will be heading up the production work on the new movie, with Smith's previous credits including TT3D, a feature documentary profiling the world famous Isle of Man TT Motorcycle Race, in addition to working with Vision3 founder Chris Parks on the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – both flicks are due at some point in 2011. Vision3 founder Chris Parks said of the latest 3D kids' blockbuster: "Working on a children's classic provides fantastic opportunities to do genuinely creative and fun 3D. "From a technical point of view our priority is to ensure both a smooth 3-D workflow and a comfortable and consistent viewing experience. "Keeping in mind Horrid Henry's comic strip origins we're intentionally using 3D card-boarding as a creative tool, working to bring some of the layered feeling of cartoons to life on the big screen." The 3D team will be using Element Technica's Quasar rig, and shooting on Reds supplied by Take2 Films.

British inventor of laptop honoured

The British designer of the world's first laptop has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Duke of Edinburgh. Bill Moggridge's original designs for the GRID Compass were drawn up way back in 1979, for which he has picked up this year's Prince Philip Designers Prize. Improving understanding of tech Moggridge's original designs have been massively important in the ways in which they have helped people understand and use technology, said the jury. The Grid Compass is widely agreed to be the world's first laptop. The machine first went on commercial release in 1982 with its own operating system, called Grid-OS. It originally cost $,8,000 (£4,900) and was used by the US military and on the space shuttle throughout the 1980s. Mr Moggridge told the BBC: "I'm really amazed. The other nominees are such super-heroes of mine and have incredible bodies of work." Past winners of the Prince Philip Designers Prize have included Sir James Dyson, Terence Conran and Lord Norman Foster.
