Lost in the hype about Siri is the fact that the iPhone 4S is the first available smartphone to support the Bluetooth 4.0 standard. Announced in early 2010, Bluetooth 4.0 focuses on low-energy, sensor-filled devices that can be powered by button cell batteries. Examples include pedometers, heart rate monitors, glucose meters, and home automation tools.</div>

Now that the first Bluetooth 4.0 ready handset has hit the market, the Bluetooth SIG group has created a new logo and name to describe these low-power devices. Starting soon, any device with a Bluetooth 4.0 compatible radio will be branded with the name Bluetooth Smart or Bluetooth Smart Ready. A new Bluetooth logo will be emblazoned on packaging to help customers locate this category of Bluetooth products.</div>

The iPhone 4S may be the first Bluetooth Smart compatible smartphone, but it's not the first Bluetooth 4.0 hardware available from Apple. The Cupertino company also added Bluetooth 4.0 support to the latest Mac Mini and MacBook Air models. These Apple products will be ready to connect to Bluetooth Smart devices once they begin to hit the market in the upcoming months.</div>

KIRKLAND, WA - Oct. 24, 2011 - The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced two new brand extensions to its globally recognized logo today in an effort to create consumer awareness around compatibility for new devices implementing Bluetooth v4.0 - the Bluetooth Smart Ready trademark and the Bluetooth Smart trademark. Bluetooth Smart Ready devices are phones, tablets, PCs and TVs that sit at the center of a consumer's connected world and implement a Bluetooth v4.0 dual mode radio. Bluetooth Smart devices are sensor-type devices like heart-rate monitors or pedometers that run on button-cell batteries and were built to collect a specific piece of information. Bluetooth Smart devices include only a single-mode low energy Bluetooth v4.0 radio.</div>

How Does Bluetooth Work?

<br />		<p>The technology of Bluetooth allows two electronic devices to communicate wirelessly. Such devices can be computers, mobile phones, printers, MP3 players, PDAs etc. Most of the device communications use cables but today wireless communication has emerged and Bluetooth is one of these technologies.</p><p>The name of Bluetooth was inspired from Harald Bluetooth, he was the king of Denmark in the late 900s. He was awarded for many of his efforts including making peace between Denmark and Norway and the introduction of Christianity. Bluetooth got its name from this king to show the importance of communication.</p><p>Technical obstacles are present that does not make it easy to bring various devices together. The physical means of communication like use of cables, radio waves and infrared are the first concern in making two devices communicate. Secondly, the two devices must have the ability to speak the same language.</p><p>Bluetooth has a wireless technology. Two devices in the surrounding area can communicate with each other at higher speeds. For the Bluetooth to enable communication between devices, these devices should also have Bluetooth technology added in its features.</p><p>Bluetooth does not only allow wireless communication between devices, human intervention is also not needed to make such communication happen. This means that when Bluetooth devices come to each other in the surrounding area, they will automatically recognize each other and start sending data.</p><p>A digital camera is a good example of Bluetooth, it can transmit files to a Bluetooth enabled photo printer. Bluetooth technology is also available in mobile phones, it can pick up phone calls when you are on the move and reroute the calls to your car's audio system so you can talk on the phone without using hands.</p><p>Initially, Bluetooth was designed for mobile phone users. Because of mobile technology, it is small and light weighted. It is also not very expensive and its price is less than 50 dollars.</p><p>The device contains instructions for communications. It has a small power usage. The distance allowing communication between the two devices is usually within 3 meters to 10 feet. For more energy and communication with another device up to 30 feet in diameter, stronger versions are being introduced. The signals of Bluetooth can communicate at the frequency of 2.45 GHz which is greater than normal TV and radio waves.</p><p>With this advent of technology, security is also an important issue because this technology allows the device to communicate with any other detected device. There is also a possibility that the files located on the device with the technology can be damaged and corrupted in even of hacking and virus attacks. <br />		<p>Wireless connectivity just got a whole new meaning with the advent of Bluetooth technology. It enables you to achieve hassle-free mobility and so doesn't restrict you geographically. Best of all, you don't need to worry about printing issues - no matter where you are.</p><p>Tips on printing using Bluetooth</p><p>Using a Bluetooth adapter can convert any printer into a Bluetooth enabled one. However while using any Bluetooth enabled printers, it is important to know a few basics. In this section we elaborate on these.</p><p>1.	Limited range: With Bluetooth enabled printers, you'll find that range is an issue. The range of distance within which printing is possible is from about 30 to 330 feet. This of course would depend on the hardware configuration. The higher the range the more the power needed, which could drain out your battery in the long run.</p><p>2.	Printing from the mobile: There are times when you just have to print that gorgeous picture or that document from your hand-held PDA to a Bluetooth enabled printer. In such cases, what you need to do is: search for your Bluetooth enabled printer on your mobile phone. You might find it in the option called BT (Bluetooth) Discovery. On clicking this, it will show all the available Bluetooth devices. Then you can select the printer and hit on "Print". However be careful, as the Discovery stage makes your phone or handheld device accessible to anyone and everyone within your vicinity. Therefore it can be susceptible to hacking. Be sure to switch off the Bluetooth mode once you're done printing.</p><p>3.	USB ports: Some printers have what is called the Pictbridge USB port which is compatible with any Bluetooth adapter. This makes printing from any Bluetooth device easier. Pictbridge is a hardware interface technology that enables your printer to access and print images and files from your mobile or PDA. To perform Pictbridge printing you need to:</p><p>a.	Connect the USB device</p><p>b.	Wait till both the devices recognize each other</p><p>c.	Select from the menu that appears, the set of images or files you want printed</p><p>d.	The menu also offers options to change the size, layout and resolution of the images</p><p>e.	Select 'Print'</p><p>4.	Hacking: Make sure you avoid setting your Bluetooth enabled device to a 'discoverable mode'. This makes it possible for your IP address to be known by any person with malicious intent. Often such attacks are directed at mobile phones, PDAs and computers. Hackers usually connect to your PDA or mobile by using fictitious names that are familiar to you. Therefore if you connect even once to their device, chances are, the hackers can keep connecting to your device and use it for malicious purposes - like sending a virus, crashing your operating system or even deleting important files.</p><p>5.	Enable encryption: For security reasons, it's best to always enable encryption for any Bluetooth transfer that you may make. In order to enable encryption in any Bluetooth enabled device, you need to use the Bluetooth connection Wizard (usually present on Windows XP operating systems).</p><p>6.	Keep firmware updated: It is also essential to ensure speed and agility in your mobile phone while printing through your wireless printers.
