LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file sharing application for the sharing of multimedia files, is no longer operational due to legal entanglements. However, the software did undergo various updates. The differences between LimeWire 4.18 and 5.0 are representative of the variations between versions of the application.
Released in 2008, LimeWire 4.18 version utilized Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and NT operating systems and provided improved client interfacing and performance than previous versions. This version boasted altered icons and a file specific button matrix to differentiate between the types of files. Released in 2009, LimeWire 5.0 utilized the same operating systems as 4.18 while focusing on improved organization, appearance, and fine-tuning the interface. This version improved upon the previous design by adding dual search bars that performed searches of the global network and the user's library. Two sidebars were also added that showed the user library, global network and friends' networks. Version 4.18 had a viewable standard progress bar and file details. A "What's New" feature and adult content filter were also added. In 5.0, a global network option allowed viewing of uploads and downloads while also allowing file sharing with Jabber and Google contacts. Search results were available in Web 2.0 format, shown according to relevance and in the previous search format. The "Advanced Tools" feature allowed users to see information on other users including bandwidth and IP addresses.
