Download and try Gimp (see Resources). Gimp is open source software. It is free to download for as long as you want to use it. Gimp has powerful image editing tools that you can use to design your own icons for your Macintosh computers. One of the main tools you could use to draw out some icons is the "Paths" tool. It allows you to draw out a line and then trace it over. The tool is useful for drawing basic shapes for icons.
Download and try Paintbrush (see Resources). Paintbrush is a Microsoft Paint clone for the Macintosh operating system. MS Paint is a basic image editing program for Windows. Although basic, it still includes functionality you can use to create powerful icons. The paintbrush and pencil tools within the program allow you to freely draw your icon design. Tools, such as the paint bucket tool, allow you to easily color in your icon.
Download and try Seashore (see Resources). This program is also a free image editor for the Macintosh operating system. It has a few more features than Paintbrush, but not quite as many as Gimp. One of its more advanced features that can be used to add some colorful detail to your icon is the gradient tool. This tool blends two different colors together to make a spectrum. It can make icons look much more detailed and dynamic.
