Download a program to copy a DVD to your computer if you do not already have one installed. Examples include Copy DVD, DVD Ripper and DVD Wizard Pro. Click the download or install button and follow the on-screen directions.

Open the program you chose to copy the DVD to your computer.

Insert the DVD into the DVD drive and wait for the computer to read it.

Select the "File" option on your DVD copy program tool bar and select "Open."

Locate the DVD file that you want to copy. It is found by clicking on the DVD drive and selecting the file. Click "OK" to select the file.

Select the button that is meant to copy the DVD files to your computer. It might say "Copy," "Start," "Run" or other similar wording. If options are listed such as converting the files to a smaller size such as MP4 or MPEG, select it if you choose. Once you start the copy process, a window should pop up asking where you want the file placed. Scroll through your computer files and select the location, and then click "OK."

Wait for the files to be downloaded to your computer. The program will let you know when it is done. Your DVD is now backed up on your computer. You can also copy those files to a new DVD disk, but it must be for your own personal use.
