Open Photoshop, click the "File" menu and select "New." Type "CustomAvatar" into the "Name" box. Type "1" into both the "Width" and "Height" boxes. Pull down the dimensions boxes and select "inches" for each. Pull down the "Background Contents" menu and select "Transparent." Click the "OK" button.
Click the "File" menu again and select "Open." Browse to a digital image to use for the avatar, such as a head shot or picture of your pet. Double-click the file name to open the image.
Click the "Lasso" tool at the top of the "Tools" pane on the left side of the screen. Draw an outline around just the part of the picture to use for the avatar, not the background. When blinking dotted lines appear, press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys to copy the selection.
Click the "CustomAvatar" box to give it focus. Press the "Ctrl" and "V" keys to paste in the copied avatar. Resize as necessary by pulling down the "Edit" menu, selecting "Transform," clicking "Scale" and shrinking the picture to fit the box.
Select the "File" menu, click "Save As," choose "GIF" from the "Format" menu and click the "Save" button.
Open Microsoft Publisher and click the "More Blank Page Sizes" button at the top of the workspace. Click "Create new page size" in the middle of the workspace. Pull down the "Layout type" menu and select "One page per sheet." Type "1" into both the "Width" and "Height" boxes and click the "OK" button. Publisher will automatically resize the workspace.
Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Clip Art" button below the tab.
Type a word or phrase to use for the avatar, such as "dragon," "kittens," "soccer ball" or "wine glass" into the "Search for" box and click the "Go" button.
Scroll through the results and double-click an image to add it to the avatar workspace. Press and hold down the "Shift" key on the keyboard, click a corner of the image and shrink it to fit the avatar box.

Open Paint, click the Paint button in the top-left corner of the screen and select "Properties." Type "1" into the "Width" and "Height" boxes. Select the "Inches" radio button; this may be already selected by default. Click the "OK" button.
Click a small colored box from the "Colors" section of the ribbon/toolbar. Click the "Brushes" button and choose the "Natural pencil" brush head.
Position the cursor on the white Paint workspace and draw the avatar outline, such as a beer bottle, cat's paw or peace sign.
Select a new colored square from the "Colors" section or click the "Edit colors" button to choose from the color rainbow. Add more accents and designs to the avatar.
Click the Paint button. Select "Save As." Give the avatar a name, click "GIF" as the "Save as type" and click "Save."
