Fotolia.com">Session border controllers are becoming a necessity for large-scale VoIP deployments.A voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) controller -- or session border controller -- is used to control call access to a given computer network by regulating the traffic at the "border" of the network. It may also be equipped with features designed to increase the efficiency with which calls are processed within the network itself. Session border controllers have become increasingly popular with corporate clients using VoIP technology, in order to better cope with high call volumes and to regulate the flow of traffic from unsecured sources (such as the Internet at large) to the local network. While there are countless manufacturers of session border controllers, three of the most well-known are Dialogic, Cisco and Acme.DialogicDialogic's session border controller is designed primarily to help manage security and network traffic. The company touts its programming architecture as able to reduce both cost and time required for implementation, enabled through a fully transparent signaling process.CiscoThis controller is built around Cisco's popular 7600 series routers, which allows clients already using these routers to integrate session border controllers into their network without having to install another layer of standalone hardware. The 7600 series session border controller is capable of performing all features necessary to manage the flow of voice traffic, including bandwidth policing and firewall traversal.AcmeAcme's hardware is designed specifically to interface with Avaya products, particularly Avaya Aura Communications Manager. This allows both Acme and Avaya to provide an integrated solution similar to the one that Cisco touts with its 7600 series session border controller. Acme's Net-Net session border controllers are designed with a particular eye toward security and network switching capabilities. References HeayReading: VoIP Session Border Controllers
