Late last year the main fake security client going around was Security Tool. Every malware site I checked tended to have this threat present. I looks like January and February of 2010 has kicked of a new fake client called Internet Security 2010.

After installing several different variations of this threat onto many different computer I was able to find out most of the symptoms many people out there will get when they become infected with this client.

Symptoms

For most out there they will notice a dialog box as soon as they attempt to log-in to the computer. This warning will tell the user they are infected with something like the Netsky virus. After the user closes down this box the user will then find several pop-ups coming at them warning them their computer is infected with a virus and that they need to purchase the Internet Security 2010 client. These are false and exaggerated claims being made by this security client and they should not be trusted.

In only around 40% of testings we also found this product to highjack the Desktop of the user and place an image there telling the user they were also infected. This is a well known scare tactic used to create urgency to buy the fake client.

In all our testings we were unable to run security software while this client was running and the Task Manager was disabled or being stopped right away.

While this security product is not the easiest thing to remove there are ways to gain the upper hand. The main objective to start needs to be on focusing on stopping the executable starting IS 2010 and then also stopping the smss32.exe file. Then you can delete both files. From there your real security software should be able to fully remove the rest of the threat on your computer.

The worst thing you could do is actually purchase this bogus software client. Every person who does is simply funding these crooks. They will keep doing this over and over until people stop falling prey to the scam.

There are many reasons why someone may become infected with a program like this. Sometimes simply going to a good website that has been hacked is enough to get your computer infected. That is why it is so important to keep all your software programs up to date and to have a good security client so these threats are stopped before they infect your computer.
