Check the FireWire cable connection running from the Sony DSR-11 to your computer. If this cable is not completely inserted into both devices, the computer will not be able to detect the attached tape deck.
Install the drivers for the Sony DSR-11 on your computer. Most newer computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7 typically do not require this, but manually installing the drivers prevents possible drive detection errors. The driver is provided on an installation CD that ships with the Sony DSR-11 unit. Insert the disc into the optical drive on your computer, accept the end-user agreement and the installation defaults, and then click "Install" to install the driver.
Eject the DVCAM tape from the tape deck and inspect the write protection switch.
This switch is located on the bottom of the tape -- holding the tape up so the spindles are facing you, it is on the underside of the tape in the right corner. If this is set to "On," the deck is will be unable to write data to the tape.
Spray compressed air into the Sony DSR-11's tape deck opening. This removes dust built up on the interior of the deck that may cause static when viewing the inserted DVCAM tapes.
