Call the person who apparently sent the e-mail if the suspicious e-mail claims to be from an employer, friend or family member. Verify that the person sent the questionable e-mail.
Look up the company or charity that apparently sent the e-mail in the Better Business Bureau's database by using the e-mail search feature.
Set up an e-mail account using Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail, or another free Web-based service. Sign into your new account and compose a new message, entering the questionable e-mail address in the "To" field. Type a test message in the body of your e-mail and click "Send." If your e-mail is returned as undeliverable after a few minutes, the questionable e-mail address is not legitimate.
