Choose a software that integrates well with your existing content creation software or shopping cart. Some companies provide password protection software that integrates specifically for content sites like WordPress or Joomla. This makes it easier to install the software on your website.

Select a password protection software that encrypts the values in the database. Encryption "jumbles" the password, so a hacker cannot steal passwords after gaining access to the database. The hacker must get the encryption key to decipher the passwords.

Choose software that locks out users after too many attempts. This stops a hacker from simply trying variations of password values. A hacker can automate hack attempts. If software shuts out an account and sends a warning, this protects from "guessing" the password.

Allow users to choose their own password and generate temporary passwords when the user first signs up. A temporary password is created when the user first signs up, and it is sent to the email address. This verifies the email address is correct. The user can then change the password to his own value.

Supply the user with a "Remember Me" text box. This allows users to set a cookie, so they can quickly come back to their account page without logging in again. Password protection software should offer this option for each user who wants to stay logged in even after leaving the page.
