Compare autoresponders on the basis of their hosting type. Autoresponders can be remotely, locally or desktop-hosted. In remote hosting, your autoresponders will be hosted on and operated from the service provider's website. Your provider sets up an email address for you to send and receive messages. You will have to pay a monthly subscription fee for remotely-hosted types. Locally-hosted autoresponders are those that are hosted on your own web server. Desktop-hosted autoresponders run on your own workstation or computer. It is generally a better idea to choose a remote-hosted autoresponder if you are starting with a small budget, and later graduate to the local or desktop-hosted types.
If you want to build several email lists, then you would need more than one autoresponder. If the number of follow-up messages per autoresponder is limited, it may affect your relationship with subscribers. A limit on the message length may prevent you from sending periodical newsletters or sales letters effectively. Ideally, your autoresponder should offer unlimited follow-up messages.
Compare autoresponders for the extent of customization they allow. An autoresponder should allow you as well as your subscriber to select the preferred format of emails. It should also be capable of capturing basic information such as visitor's first and last name and e-mail address. The autoresponder should also allow you to send messages personalized with this data.
Compare autoresponders for Import/Export feature. This feature allows you to import or export your subscriber list from/to Excel or any other data form. In case you switch to another provider in the future, this feature helps you transfer your list to the new service.
Compare autoresponder services for their customer support. Free customer support is ideal.
