Go to your "Device Manager" on your computer by clicking the "Start" button, then "Control Panel." Click "System and Maintenance" and then select "Device Manager." If it requires a password, enter your administrator password. You will see a list of available devices.

Click on the "Start" button, "Control Panel" then "System." Open the "Hardware" icon and from there you will see the "Device Manager." This is for Windows XP users.

Enable the infrared port by double-clicking on "Infrared Devices," right click on the device and select "Enable."

Go to your cell phone's "Menu" and select "Settings."

.

Scroll down until you see the "Connectivity" menu. Select it and a list of devices appears.

Check the box for "Infrared" or "IR." Some phones do not have the check box, in which case you select the "IR" or IrDA," which stands for infrared data association.

Align your laptop or your cell phone to another device that has an active infrared port. A wireless icon appears on your screen when the two devices detect each other.

Click on the file that you wish to send and select "Send Via Infrared." Click "Yes" when you are asked for confirmation. Your files will send and you will get a progress bar. Click "OK" when finished.
