I want to do this! What's This? Some people never take the time to update their
computers, which is a disservice to them because Microsoft regularly updates Windows to add features and make the operating system more secure. One of the products that Microsoft has updated is
Internet Explorer 6, the default Web browser included with Windows XP. If you are still using Internet Explorer 6, there are a number of advantages to upgrading to Internet Explorer 7.Tabbed BrowsingMost users are likely to find tabbed browsing to be the most revolutionary new feature of Internet Explorer 7. If you want to view two pages simultaneously in Internet Explorer 6, you need to open two separate browser windows. Internet Explorer 7 allows you to create a tab at the top of the window for each page that you have open. To view a different page, simply click the tab. For users who like having several pages open at once, tabbed browsing reduces desktop clutter in Windows significantly. Additionally,
the Internet Explorer 7 interface is itself less cluttered, taking up less space at the top of the window with various buttons and controls.Phishing FilterPhishing is a technique that dishonest individuals use to steal passwords by constructing fraudulent websites that look like real ones. Because it is possible to construct an extremely convincing replica of a website by using that site's source code, phishing attacks can be very effective. Internet Explorer 7 reduces the likelihood of a phishing attack being successful by warning the user when a website does not appear authentic.ClearType CompatibilityComputer fonts can appear jagged around the edged when viewed on a very sharp monitor. To make text on the screen easier on the eyes, Windows XP includes ClearType, a technology that smooths the edges of fonts to improve readability. However, ClearType support does not extend to Internet Explorer 6. To view smooth ClearType text in the Web browser, you must upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.Secure Site NotificationWebsites that receive sensitive information from users, such as banks, use encryption to protect that data. A website with an encrypted login page is called a "secure site," and you should never give important information to a site that is not secure. Traditionally, a Web browser displays a padlock icon at the bottom of the screen to notify the user when the site they are viewing is secure. Internet Explorer 7 moves the padlock icon to the top of the screen to make users more aware of the security status of a page.Search BoxInternet Explorer 6 does not display a permanent search box at the top of the screen unless you have a third-party toolbar installed. Toolbars consume space at the top of the browser window, taking away from the viewable area of Web pages. Internet Explorer 7 includes a permanent search box positioned next to the address bar. You may customize the search box so that it utilizes the search engine of your choice. References
