The next-gen memory brings greater speeds with lower voltage requirement and is likely to be employed in next-gen GPUs.
For years now GPU makers have been using GDDR5 memory as standard to work along with their respective graphics processors, but that might change this year. Samsung, which is a prominent memory maker in the world has commenced mass production of its GDDR6 memory chips. The new DRAM standard is based on the company’s 10nm technology and is available in 16GB which is double to that of the company’s 20-nanometer 8Gb GDDR5 memory. Samsung claims that with a 18Gbps pin speed, the new chips can hit a speed of 72GBps. What’s more, this new DRAM solution will run more efficiently as it requires just 1.35V. In contrast, GDDR5 currently provides pin speed of 9Gbps at 1.55V.
Jinman Han, Senior Vice President, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering at Samsung Electronics, said, “Beginning with this early production of the industry’s first 16Gb GDDR6, we will offer a comprehensive graphics DRAM line-up, with the highest performance and densities, in a very timely manner. By introducing next-generation GDDR6 products, we will strengthen our presence in the gaming and graphics card markets and accommodate the growing need for advanced graphics memory in automotive and network systems”.
Samsung is certain that this new memory will play a critical role in the early launches of next-generation graphics cards. According to the company, it will also play an important role in rapidly growing fields such as 8K Ultra HD video processing, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
Samsung, however, is not the only player with a GDDR6 memory in the market. Last year SK Hynix also introduced its version of GDDR6 memory which is based on TSMC’s 12nm FinFET process. The company also disclosed at that time that the new chip is being developed for a for a client, for use in an upcoming high-end graphics card to be released in early 2018.
