ZTE is no longer making the Axon 7 and the Chinese company hasn't announced a successor for this device yet, instead choosing to focus on the foldable Axon M, which is due to launch in its home market this week and Europe by the end of March.
However, ZTE is apparently working on a new smartphone, as revealed by a recent Wi-Fi certification. The handset that got that treatment is known only by its model number, Z2321U, at the moment. The most interesting bit about the Wi-Fi Alliance documents is that the device is running Android 8.1 Oreo, which is a version of the OS that has so far been confined to Google's Pixels and Nexuses.
The ZTE Z2321U will have LTE capabilities, of course. It may in fact be the long anticipated Axon 8 (or whatever the company ends up calling the Axon 7's successor). It hasn't yet been spotted at TENAA, the FCC, or the Bluetooth SIG, so stay tuned and we'll let you know more about it once other information becomes available.
