Nokia smartphones may soon get Lumia camera UI, hints HMD Global executive [ad_1]



NEW DELHI: Recently, it was reported that HMD Global, the Nokia handset manufacturer and seller, got possession of some patents with regards to Lumia Camera UI. Now, it seems like those patents are slowly turning into reality.

HMD Global chief product manager Juho Sarvikas recently hinted that the company could soon bring Lumia UI-like features to existing Nokia smartphone.

When asked by a user "Good. But put Oreo a side. Is camera app going to be updated or not?" Sarvikas replied in just one word "Yep!" In later tweets when a user tweeted "We want lumia camera UI back. The most convenient UI ever," Sarvikas replied I agree with your assessment" along with an emoji.

We are not sure when exactly the company plans to bring Lumia camera UI or similar features to the existing camera app in Nokia smartphones. However, the aforementioned tweets do hint what HMD plans to do with those patents.

The company's cheapest smartphone to launch so far, Nokia 2 will hit the retail stores in mid-November. Here's are seven key things you need to know about the all-new Nokia smartphone.

Nokia 2 sports a price tag of 99 euros (roughly Rs 7,500). The Finnish-based company, however, did not reveal the smartphone's India pricing. Rumours suggest that Nokia 2 will come at a price tag of Rs 6,999 in India and hit the retail shelves by mid-November.

Promises two days of battery backup

One of the USPs of the smartphone is its battery backup. Nokia 2 has 4,100 mAh battery capacity and the company claims that it can offer battery backup of up to 2 days on a single charge.

Only phone in this segment to offer Google Assistant

Going by the likely price, Nokia 2 is the smartphone to come with Google Assistant support in its price segment. This virtual assistant from Google allows users to ask multiple questions in one go.

Likely to be the cheapest Android smartphone to get Android Oreo update

The Nokia 2 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box. However, the company has promised Android 8.0 Oreo update for the device. The Oreo update is likely to make Nokia 2 the cheapest Android smartphone running on Google's latest Android OS.

Cheapest Nokia smartphone

HMD Global has launched various Nokia smartphones this year catering to different price segments. It launched the Nokia 8, which is the flagship smartphone and it also launched Nokia 6,5,3 in the budget category. At a price tag of 99 euros, Nokia 2 is the cheapest Android smartphone from the company launched so far.

Nokia 2 comes with a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display and is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor. The dual-SIM smartphone offers 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB by adding a microSD card. The device sports an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front shooter for selfies. Along with this, the device offers all the essential connectivity options.

Unveiled globally today

HMD launched Nokia 2 globally today at an event held in Gurugram, Haryana. The company's global CEO Rajeev Suri attended the event. He claimed that India is among the top three countries globally in terms of Nokia activations. Suri further added that the company plans to make Nokia phones available across 100,000 stores in the country by the end of this year.


As a refresher, HMD Global in July
received around 500 patents
as a part of the acquisition deal from Microsoft, one of which was for the 'Lumia Camera UI'.

HMD Global might bring a revamped camera UI with Android 8.0 Oreo. However, nothing is confirmed for now.




On a related note, HMD Global has just announced its Nokia 2 smartphone in India. The handset is the company's cheapest smartphone till date. It costs EUR 99 and will be made available from mid-November.



Nokia 2 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS and will soon be getting Android 8.0 Oreo. It sports a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution LTPS screen with 16:9 aspect ratio. HMD Global claims the smartphone to feature a 4100mAh battery, which can run for 2 days.



Powered by the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor, Nokia 2 supports 1GB RAM and 8GB inbuilt storage, which can be expanded up to 128GB with a microSD card.



With Nokia 2, users get a 5MP front-facing fixed focus camera and an 8MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash. They also get Google Assistant. Connectivity options of the smartphone include GPS, GLONASS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, FM Radio and Bluetooth. It measures 143.5x71.3x9.30mm and supports dual SIM cards (Nano).
