While 2017 can be called the official year for smartphones with dual cameras, the first dual camera smartphone was launched way back in 2014. The HTC One M8 came with a dual rear camera setup which consists of a main UltraPixel sensor of 4MP and a secondary depth sensor.
However, after that, the Taiwanese giant has not launched a single smartphone that features dual cameras. Even the newly launched flagship U11 Plus lacks a dual camera setup. It does seem a bit odd as even the small OEMs are now coming up with dual camera smartphones. Well, the good news is HTC is soon going to re-enter the dual camera smartphone market.
We say this based on the statement made by the HTC President Chialin Chang. As reported by Engadget, Chang said, "We'll definitely be releasing a dual-camera phone next year, but we'll need to figure out how to make this feature stand out."
HTC has been lately focusing a lot on improving the camera aspect on its flagships. Notably, the U11 that was launched earlier this year managed to get an impressive score of 90 out of 100 on DxOMark. The brand-new U11 Plus, on the other hand, features the same camera but with some improvements.
As of now, the company president refused to delve into the details of the dual camera configuration on its upcoming flagship. Presumably, we could see a combination of Monochrome lens and Telephoto lens.
Chang further revealed that HTC will be launching only 5 to 6 smartphones in 2018 just like it this year. However, along with high-end phones, the company is also planning to release some mid-range smartphones especially meant for the Chinese market.
In addition to all these, he also said that the acquisition of HTC's Pixel smartphone division by Google is still in process and the deal could close in the beginning of next year.
