WhatsApp unlikely to run on JioPhone

The popular messenger app WhatsApp is unlikely to run on JioPhones, at least initially. Many reports have suggest that the phone will not support the world's most popular meassaging app. Reliance Jio has its own chat platform JioChat, may be the company wants to promote that. The phone, however, comes with other popular apps like YouTube and Facebook.

JioPhone to come in at least two variants (based on processor)

At the unveiling of the JioPhone, the company's chairman Mukesh Ambani didn't reveal much about the phone's specifications. So there were speculations about the processor that the phone will run on. While some reports had claimed that the phone will run on Qualcomm's processor others had said that it will be powered by China-based Spreadtrum Communications' processor. However, over the week both the companies have tweeted about their association with the JioPhone, signaling that there will be at least two variants of the device. One powered by Qualcomm, the other by Spreadtrum. "Glad to partner with @reliancejio on the new #JioPhone, powered by our #205 mobile platform," Qualcomm India tweeted. "Making India digital with #JioPhone. @Spreadtrum is proud to be a part of the digital freedom for #featurephone users. @Reliancejio," goes the tweet from Spreadtrum.

Eligibility for refund: Need to regularly recharge your phone

Users will be able to pre-book the Reliance JioPhone on paying a refundable security deposit of Rs 1500. They can get refund for this security deposit after minimum three years. However, to be eligible for a refund they will need to recharge their JioPhones at least once in 90 days.

Full security deposit to be made during pre-booking itself

Prospective buyers of Reliance JioPhone will have to pay the security deposit of Rs 1500 upfront. This mean the payment will have to be made during pre-booking itself.

Jio TV cable may not be free

One of the hottest features of the JioPhone is that the users will be able to mirror the content on their phones on a TV. The company announced a JioPhone TV cable for the same. Though the company didn't specify if this cable will come bundled with JioPhone or users will have to pay extra for it but reports have suggested that the users may have to pay between Rs 500 -1500 for it. Also, users of the TV cable will have to take the Rs 309 data plan per month.

FUP limit of 500MB/day is enough for the JioPhone

Another nagging doubt that many users have is if the FUP limit of 500MB per day is enough. Yes it is, considering that the screen-size of JioPhone is small with a very low-resolution so the internet data consumption too is less.

No hotspot support

Reliance Jio's phone's software does not come with support for hotspot, a company executive confirmed the same to GadgetsNow. Though the company executive didn't specifically say if this is due to lack of hardware support or has been locked on software front.

​ Supports Wi-Fi

Another big question that many have about the phone is Wi-Fi support. The same will be there, GadgetsNow confirmed this too from the company sources.

Users can book the phone on their MyJio app

Interested users can book the new JioPhone via the company's MyJio app. They can also visit a Jio retailer to book the handset (both August 24th onwards).




During the meeting Ambani announced that the pre-booking of the phone will begin from August 24 and will be made available on first-come-first-serve basis by September. The Reliance JioPhone comes at an "effective" price of Rs 0. The company is though will be taking a refundable security deposit Rs 1500 to avoid potential misuse of the device. The amount will be refunded after a minimum period of three years.

The customers can pre-book the device via various retail stores in the country. Moreover, they can also book the VoLTE feature phone by using the company My Jio app.




The Jio Phone runs on VoLTE network and comes with a host of pre-installed services such as JioTV and JioCinema apps. The device also has its own digital assistant along with the support for voice commands. It also comes with support for 24 Indian languages. Reliance says that users can long press on the '5' key to directly call their near and dear ones. Furthermore, the company will bring NFC feature on Jio-branded phones as well later this year. The feature will arrive as part of a software update.



Reliance Jio Phone also supports voice commands. It includes support for 22 Indian languages. Furthermore, the company has also promised to add NFC payment support to JioPhone later this year. JioPhone is said to run on KAI OS, which is a forked OS version of the Firefox OS. For now, it doesn't offer support for WhatsApp.



The company recently started beta testing of the JioPhone. Reliance Jio employees will be using the device and will report any software and hardware glitches. So, that the company has resolve the issue before the phone reaches to the users in September.

Reliance Jio subscribers, now there's a way to get discounts on your Jio recharges. Several e-wallets are offering cashbacks on Reliance Jio recharges if you pay for the recharge using the same. These assured cashbacks are available on all Reliance Jio plans above Rs 300. In July this year, Reliance Jio launched two new tariff plans priced at Rs 399 and Rs 349 under its 'Dhan Dhana Dhan' offer. The new Rs 399 Jio plan offers users 1GB data per day for 84 days. While the Rs 349 plan offers 20GB data with 56 days validity. There is no daily FUP limit under this plan. So, here are four ways you can avail cashback on your Reliance Jio recharge.

Paytm: Cashback of Rs 76

The digital payment service provider Paytm is offering cashback of Rs 76 on the recharge of Rs 300 and above. The users have to use the promo code 'PAYTMJIO' to avail the cashback. The company says that the cashback will be credited within 24 hours of the recharge done.

Amazon Pay: Cashback of Rs 99

Amazon Pay users will get cashback of Rs 99 on their first Jio recharge. The offer is applicable on recharge of Rs 309 and above plans and can be availed from August 14 to August 19. The cashback will be credited into the Amazon Pay account of the user within seven days, as per the company. Along with this, Amazon is also offering cashback of Rs 20 on all mobile recharges made till November 30, 2017.

PhonePe: Cashback of Rs 75

The Flipkart-owned mobile wallet PhonePe is also giving a cashback on recharge of Reliance Jio connections. Users who have a PhonePe account will get a cashback of Rs 75. The offer is valid from August 14 to August 21 on the recharge of Rs 309 and above plans. The cashback will be credited into PhonePe account.

MobiKwik: Cashback of Rs 59 and Rs 159 (for new users)

MobiKwik users will get cashback of Rs 59 if they recharge their Reliance Jio connection using the e-wallet. The offer is valid on Rs 399 plan only. To recharge, users have to add the promo code 'JIOMBK'. Also, new users who are doing their first recharge will get cashback of Rs 159. These users have to use the promo code 'NEWJIO'. This offer is also available only on the company's Rs 399 plan.
