NEW DELHI: 2017 has been the year of dual rear camera smartphones. Keeping up with the trend, Qualcomm has announced its new ISPs (Image Signal Processors) which are likely to come as a part of the upcoming smartphone SoC and includes an improved biometric authentication and high-resolution depth sensing features.
Qualcomm says the improvements are made "to meet growing demands of photo and video for a broad range of mobile devices and head mounted displays (HMD)." Also mentioned is that the new ISPs and camera modules will support better image quality and new computer vision, which will use deep learning techniques and make image processing faster.
The new ISPs come with a new camera architecture, which will deliver power efficiency for the next Snapdragon Mobile and VR Platforms. The ISPs include three modules - iris authentication module, passive depth sensing module and an active depth sensing module.
It has been mentioned that the chipset will be using infrared light for measuring depth and accurate face recognition. What may also be seen are some improvements in HDR Photos, video stabilisation and better motion tracking using a VR headset. We are yet to see how much improvement will be there in the upcoming Android flagship smartphones.
On a related note, it looks like the earlier glimpse of the new ISPs could be seen with the rumoured Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. Both smartphones are said to arrive later this year and are rumoured to come

According to a report by Android Headlines, Google's upcoming flagships will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 processor, which will be quite similar to the Snapdragon 835 but will have quite higher CPU and GPU clock speed as compared to 835. This means that the processor will be energy efficient and quite stronger as compared to 835. However, the new chipset may also include new ISPs for better photography experience.
