Computer ForensicsJust as forensic experts use evidence to piece together events that have already happened, computer forensic experts look at hard drives to recover personal data that would otherwise be lost. They access the raw data on the damaged drive, and use what they know of file systems to salvage what they can.Data RecoveryYou can also try to recover data yourself.
There are a number of programs, such as Recover My Files, Helix and The Sleuth Kit, that you can use to recover data yourself. System restore discs don't always recover or preserve personal data.Corrupted Hard DriveIf the system files on your hard drive become corrupted to the point at which you cannot boot normally, but your hard drive is physically undamaged, you can restore the use of your hard drive by re-installing your operating system.
While this will overwrite any personal data you have not recovered, it restores the corrupted system files so you can boot your system normally. Most computers ship with the installation discs for your operating system.
