Close Outlook. Click the Windows "Start" button and type "Control Folders." Click "OK." This opens your Windows folder options. To use the scanpst.exe utility, you must show all hidden files and folders.

Click "Folder Options." Click the "View" tab. Make sure the box labeled "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. This shows your hidden files. Click "OK" to save your changes.
Click the Windows "Start" button and type "Scanpst.exe" into the search text box. A detail window is shown that finds the location of the scanpst.exe file for your version of Outlook.
Double-click "scanpst.exe." This opens a utility window. Click "Browse" and point to the location of your PST file. The default location is "c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook" where "username" is your Windows account name.
Click "Start" to run the utility. It may take several minutes for the utility to complete. After the utility completes, open Outlook again. In the main menu, click "File," then click "Folder List." This opens a new window which should list several parts of your Outlook email recovered from the scan.
Click the "File" menu item and click "Data File Management." Click "Add" to create a new Outlook file. Select "Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)" when asked what type of folder you want to create. Type a name for your PST file and click "OK." This creates a new file where you drag and drop your old, restored files to the new PST file.
Drag the files from your opened recovered window in step five to the new folder you created. The old recovered email is named "Lost and Found." Drag and drop these items to your new PST folder. This saves your old, corrupted information to your new PST file in Outlook. The next time you start Outlook, the information is restored.
